Feedlot Facilities

Types of Facilities
  • Facilities for cattle feeding in the Midwest vary from complete confinement to complete open lots, with little or no wind break. With this much difference, it's obvious why cattle owners do not agree on the best facilities for feeding cattle.
  • Each cattle feeder must make their own decision on the best facility for themselves based on finances, future plans, number fed, labor, etc.

Handling facilities (corral)
  • Every cattle owner should have facilities for handling cattle. These facilities are most important for receiving, shipping, and treatment of cattle.
  • Sick cattle should not have to walk far for treatment; so it is desirable to have handling facilities in close proximity to the rest of the lot. Circular working always reduces labor, since cattle will move better. Have sorting and cutting pens; they will reduce shrink problems.
  • Since cattle often have to be worked in bad weather, it's not a bad idea to have a roof over at least a portion of your handling facilities.
