Corn Silage Value Chart

In an effort to have some standard silage value to use in figuring rations, we have put together the following chart. This value is closely related to the formula used by Iowa State University and includes the following assumptions:

  1. Tons per acre – We have used the rate of 16 tons per acre of silage taken out of the silo.
  2. Corn price – The price per bushel changes as indicated in the chart.
  3. Bushels per acre - This projection is based on 110 bushels of harvested corn per acre.
  4. Silage harvesting costs – The additional cost of silage over corn grain is $100 per acre. This includes costs for harvesting, storage, unloading and handling, and additional fertilizer cost for silage compared to corn for grain.
